Introduction

The Performance Appraisal and Career Guidance Module will address the participant's role as an appraisee and appraiser. The performance appraisal is a valuable tool in helping people develop and contribute to continuous improvement through the organisation. It provides a unique opportunity to review the past in a way which will help plan for the future. The Performance Appraisal and Career Guidance Programme addresses the communication and influencing skills needed to ensure that performance appraisals are meaningful, non-threatening and provide a real opportunity to guide careers and improve performance. The learning process involves simulation exercises, using company situations, for participants to try out new skills and adapt them to their own particular style.

Objectives By the end of the Performance Appraisal and Career Guidance Programme participants will be able to:
  • Identify the elements of a successful performance appraisal interview and how it applies to themselves as an appraiser and appraisee

  • Identify and discuss individual development needs and potential and their link to company, departmental and appraisee aims
  • Identify the type of career paths available within modern flatter organisations and be able to provide guidance
  • Consider potential problem areas in giving career advice, such as raised expectations and lack of direction and have practised how to steer the interview to a positive conclusion
