  • Studying Performing Arts here at ARU has been good although I am not sure I will be able to make career out of it when I graduate.

  • As much as I have enjoyed my time here I do wish i had the confidence that I will have a career path when I graduate in the summer. The course has been good but not met all my expectations unfortunately. If i was to choose a uni again for my course I probably would not choose ARU!

What I would highlight: Liking my second year better than the first. I struggled to adjust to uni life in my first year, but now I feel a lot more confident. I also feel like I now know my tutors and I can approach them more when I need their support. Overall I love ARU.

Course programme

Whether you see yourself as a director, performer, designer or administrator, this course will prepare you thoroughly for a career in theatre.

Over a period of three years you’ll explore movement and physicality, as well as the opportunities created by fusing and connecting movement/dance, new media techniques, physical theatre and contemporary theatre practice.

There’ll be every opportunity to ‘learn by doing’. We’ve exclusive access to the studio performance theatre, rehearsal studio, lecture room and other facilities of the Key Theatre in Peterborough - so you can put what you’re learning into practice, whether on stage or front and back of house.

Industry professionals and physical theatre experts teach the course and typically you’ll study six modules a year, covering theory and practice. Here are some of the learning and teaching methods we use:

  • practical sessions
  • practitioner demonstrations
  • group work and projects
  • seminar-based activities
  • observing or shadowing industry professionals
  • academic presentations, workshops, performances, dissertations and tutorials.

We’ll help you develop the skills you’ll need to work independently with texts and other resources, such as digital media, production elements, and site-specific execution – just as you’ll be doing in your career.

By the time you graduate you’ll have a sound understanding of Performance Arts theory, practice, technologies and specialisms, as well as the ability to critically evaluate your own, and others’, work.

You’ll also be able be ready to join the working theatre and contribute to the production, design, rehearsal and other aspects of developing performances, using professional terminologies, techniques, structures and working methods.

Additionally you’ll have a range of transferable skills such as communication and presentation, team working, IT literacy and project management.
