Who is this course for?
If you are interested in acting and be prepared to work hard to gain further experience in performance this course could be for you. Ideally you shall have performed previously to some extent through theatre or dance at school or outside of school. Although this is not necessary, it would be an advantage. As a starting point you should at least be interested in theatre, movement, dance and singing.

What are the entry requirements?
You require a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade D. Ideally one of these D grades should in English. It will be to your advantage if you have more than the minimum. Induction is taken very seriously at this College. You will follow a five week induction programme where your suitability for the level and type of programme you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

  • You can read and understand short pieces of writing such as letters, messages, simple stories, timetables and adverts. You can write short pieces of writing - for example an email to a friend, a simple letter, a story or a message.

What qualification will I receive?
The qualification that you shall receive upon completing the course will be the BTEC First Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting), which is equivalent to 4 GCSEs.

Where can it lead?
Students usually progress from the BTEC First Diploma on to the BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Performance) offered at the college. After students go onto study for BA Hons degrees at Drama School and University.

What will I study?
You will take classes in Performing Arts, Arts Administration, Stage Management and the technical aspects of theatre and participate in actual performances produced by the School of the Arts throughout the year. There are plenty of opportunities to take part in theatre productions to improve your own performance skills. You should also be aware that the course provides you skills other than acting or performance. You may prefer a career path in technical aspects of theatre or in management and there are also opportunities to practice these skills.

How will I be taught?
You will take classes in acting, voice, movement and improvisation. These skills are further developed in performance based projects, enabling you to gain confidence and gain an understanding of the acting process. You will also study the preparation and management of theatre or performance. The course also includes experiences in the business side of performance and professional theatre practice.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed continuously throughout the course and your assessments shall be based mainly on your practical work in research, rehearsal and in performance. In other classes you shall be assessed on the basis of your evaluation writing, expressive writing and communication skills. There are no formal tests in the First Diploma course as you are assessed through assignments and projects.

What support is available while I am on the course?
You shall be supported by a personal tutor, specialist lecturers and have specialist technical support throughout the course. The College offers a comprehensive range of student services including language support and guidance.
