Performing Engineering Operations - Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course overview This framework has been designed specifically for the engineering and manufacturing sector. Manufacturing is one of the largest industries within the United Kingdom, with employers becoming increasingly aware of the penalties of ineffective and inefficient manufacturing techniques and the need to train their workforce to ensure that the manufacturing process is as efficient as possible and waste is kept to a minimum. Within the framework of improving operational performance there is the opportunity to focus upon engineering or manufacturing aspects of production. The engineering pathway covers skills such as communicating technical information and the production of mechanical drawings using a CAD (computer-aided design) system, practical skills such as welding, fabrication, general maintenance and other engineering applications. The employer together with the Learning and Skills Development Officer will select the units within the competence based element which are most applicable to their job role. Typically, individuals who are working towards the achievement of this framework have the following job roles; metal making and treating process operatives, plant and machine operatives, assembly (electrical & electronic products, vehicles and metal goods, marine craft, aerospace – major and sub-assemblies) and routine inspection and testing. Apprenticeships are a tested way of training either a new or existing team member. An apprenticeship will provide on-the-job training which leads to an employee gaining a nationally recognised qualification which has been developed by the Sector Skills Council. The Apprenticeship framework will include the following elements; • Performing Engineering Operations – Level 2 Diploma (NVQ) • Industrial Environmental Awareness – Level 2 Award • Mathematics – Level 1 • English – Level 1 • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills • Employment Rights and Responsibilities Entry requirements An employee/apprentice must be over 16 years of age with no prior level 4 qualifications or above working a minimum of 30 contracted hours per week in an appropriate occupational role
