What are the entry requirements?
You will need at least 5 GCSE grades at A*-C (including grade B or above in English Language) and AS Level in Persian obtained in 2008/2009.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2
  • Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear. Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2

Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.

This course can lead to progression in studying Persian in Higher Education. It will also count towards your UCAS points. This qualification could also help with career prospects in related fields.

What will I study?
1. Knowledge, Understanding and Skills

In addition to the requirements for the AS units, you will be required to:

  • use the language to present viewpoints, develop arguments, analyse and evaluate in writing;
  • transfer meaning from the modern foreign language into English;
  • understand and apply the grammatical system and a range of structures as detailed in the A Level specification;
  • study aspects of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of one or more of the countries or communities whose language is being studied.

2. Language Topic areas

Spoken and written sources will include material that relates to the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of one or more of the countries or communities where the language is spoken. The Topic areas for the A2 specification are:

Society

  • Integration and exclusion: age; gender; race; religion; equality of opportunity
  • Law and order: trends of crime and punishment; civil unrest; policing
  • Unemployment: causes and consequences (local, national or global)

The Environment

  • The individual and the environment: recycling; changing individual impact; local conservation
  • Energy management: alternative energy sources; changing use of fossil fuels; nuclear energy; changing energy demands
  • Pollution: causes; consequences; solutions
  • Conservation of the natural world: changing habitats; impact of man and pollution; local, national or global initiatives
  • Medical progress: development and change - impacts on health care, life styles, ethics and beliefs
  • Scientific advances: change and innovation - impacts and issues on society, knowledge and education
  • Technological developments: change and development - impacts on lifestyles, habits, work and education.

How will I be taught?
You will learn through lectures, classwork, individual tutorials as well as personal study.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through an examination at the end of the year.
