Course programme

This course will give you the skills you need to take advantage of the growing field of athletic development, equipping you for work in personal training, strength and conditioning, and applied sports science.

You will focus on developing a range of practical skills underpinned by scientific knowledge.As an important part of the course, you will prepare for accreditation by the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) - a prerequisite for working in the strength and conditioning field. You will undertake a variety of theoretical and practical case studies that would potentially be evaluated during your UKSCA assessments.You will learn from a course team with strong links within various sports science settings, giving you opportunities to gain valuable experience of elite level sport.

The course emphasises work experience in order to increase your employability, contacts and career prospects on completion, and previous students have been placed with Charlton Athletic FC, London Scottish RFC, Gymbox, LA Fitness and a variety of athletic clubs.You will learn in a fully-equipped gym and laboratory, using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, including Olympic lifting platforms, force plate analysis, VO2 Max, and blood and lactate testing. This knowledge and practical experience will put you at the forefront of the personal training/strength and conditioning industry.

You will need:

  • Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent (240 credits) in a sports science-related subject
  • GCSE English language and Mathematics at Grade C (or equivalent) or above.
  • Students for which English is a second language are required to pass the IELTS test achieving a minimum of level 6.

You will be assessed through coursework and observational practicals, plus reflective practice in some assignments allowing you to plan your future career.

On successful completion of the course, you will achieve a BSc (Hons) in Personal Training with Strength and Conditioning.This course prepares you for a career in personal training, strength and conditioning or applied sports science. During the course, you will be based in an athletic sports environment working as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, or you will build a client base either 'in-house' at your current facility or externally with private clients. This work experience, alongside UKSCA accreditation and the knowledge you have gained throughout the course, will enable you to apply for strength and conditioning posts, fitness coaching posts or personal trainer/fitness manager posts.
