Course programme

This course aims to enable student teachers to meet and go beyond meeting the Teachers’ Standards through: Exploring how learning links to the development of ourselves as teachers and the pupils with whom we work Harnessing the power of research and professional knowledge as a key part of our own reflective practice and theory-building Promoting creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning Taking account of the role of education in developing the whole person by modelling a reflective and enquiry-based approach to learning, promoting learning in a broad range of local, national and international contexts and exploring sustainability as a key feature of learning for the present and the future; and by promoting core educational values such as honesty, compassion, integrity and the pursuit of wisdom Promoting equality of opportunity in all learning environments Monitoring, evaluating and assessing the impact of the learning environment on all learners Providing individual support and development for learners based on their individual needs and endeavours to build respectful learning communities You will learn to teach across the Early Years and Primary Phases of education with a programme designed to meet The Teachers’ Standards criteria set out by the National Centre for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). This means that qualifying students are not restricted to a limited age range for their career. Although not guaranteed, students can request an age range (3-7 or 5-11) to focus on for Professional Placements. These requests will be taken into consideration when allocating available placements. Students can also opt to express an interest in languages. By doing so, students will follow the same course but will have some additional opportunities to engage with language learning and teaching, including a self-funded research placement opportunity in a French, German or Spanish primary school setting. We welcome students with any foreign language qualifications or relevant experience or skill however, the self-funded research placement opportunities would only be available in France, Germany and Spain. We have a strong partnership with local primary schools and Early Years Settings who are fully involved in all aspects of the course including: recruitment and selection; course planning; grading of student teachers and developing the course.
