Course summary
This new, innovative skills focused course has been designed to equip practitioners with the knowledge and competence to work collaboratively with service users with a serious mental health problem, using evidence-based interventions.

On completion of the course you will be able to:
Provide safe and effective evidence based psychosocial treatments for psychosis with service users and their families/carers.
Combine individual clinical expertise with a knowledge of current best evidence from systematic research, when making decisions about treatment of individual service users.
Continually evaluate competence in evidence based interventions for psychosis, identifying and responding to needs for further personal and professional development.
Utilise clinical supervision to ensure that practice is safe, effective and professionally accountable.
Maintain a comprehensive awareness of relevant developments in research, practice and policy and modify practice accordingly, identifying where there are gaps in the evidence.
Assess the use of evidence based interventions in your practice area and facilitate changes to policy and practice to foster dissemination.
The Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) comprises of 60 academic credits at Level 7. You will study three, 20 credit modules.
The course is delivered by a practicing and highly experienced Mental Health Lecturer Practitioner, ensuring clear integration of theory to contemporary practice. The design of this course allows you to work in your own clinical area and enhance and develop your clinical competence through supervised work with mental health service users and families/carers.

About this course

Entry requirements
You will:
Hold a first degree
Be a mental health practitioner, in current employment in the UK – you must have access to and be working with service-users who have experience of psychosis and psychosis-related problems for the duration of the course.
Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at IELTS Level 7.

Course detail
You will study and successfully pass the following three modules, in order to achieve the PgCert Psychosocial Interventions for Psychosis:
PgCert (60 credits at Level 7):
Assessment and Case Formulation L7 – 20 credits
Family Intervention L7 – 20 credits
Medication Management and Physical Wellbeing L7 – 20 credits

What will I learn in each of the Psychosocial Intervention Modules and how will this enhance my practice?
Assessment and Case Formulation L7

This module will equip you with the knowledge, skills and competence to:
Assess service users in a systematic and holistic manner including their strengths, hopes, goals and aspirations
Develop a collaborative case formulation with service users
Underpin the process of assessment and case formulation with a recovery focused approach
Family Intervention L7

This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to:
Use assessment tools and develop a working case formulation of strengths and needs with a service user and their family
Deliver and evaluate family intervention in practice with a service user and their family/carers
Examine the evidence base for family interventions
Evaluate and reflect on your own practice using a self-rating tool
Medication Management and Physical Well Being L7

This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to:
Assess the physical health of a service user with mental illness
Assess the medication management needs of a service user with mental illness
Review the assessment outcomes and draw together salient themes into a working case conceptualisation in collaboration with a service user
Deliver a range of evidenced based interventions to promote medication management and physical wellbeing
Assessment Methods:

We use a variety of methods to promote the development of your clinical skills and competence. These include:
audio recording of a clinical session with a service user
case studies
presentations
reflective account
Clinical Supervision
As psychosocial intervention training involves active learning through through implementing the tools, skills and knowledge in your clinical setting, you will have a designated PSI clinical supervisor based in your workplace, for the duration of the module/course. The module tutors, in liaison with your employer, will assist in identifying a supervisor.
