About this course

The practice placement takes place throughout the programme and culminates in a 10-week block at the end of the course. Practice is normally carried out within your place of work. There are core modules that are shared by all students and specialist modules. It may be possible to undertake the programme over a longer period of time.

There are a variety of learning and teaching strategies which are utilised during the course as well as a range of assessment methods to assess the knowledge and theoretical components which underpin practice.

This module will provide a framework for specialist practitioners wishing to develop a deeper and more contextual approach to knowledge of public health in contemporary society. Understanding the context of policy and research is fundamental for effective multidisciplinary public health working. This will allow an opportunity to critically debate and analyse the social, political and cultural factors which influence health and health choices over the lifespan. Providing a contextual perspective will encourage closer scrutiny of current policy, public health theories and practice. Seeing themselves as part of the wider workforce will present challenges however, they will identify how skill and knowledge can be applied to new situations to improve population health. Moving beyond individual care to address health inequity and poor health outcomes over the lifespan will necessitate a proactive approach to more sustainable working and include effective use of resources from a local, national and global context. Using evidence-based policy, epidemiological data and evaluative skills practitioners will develop a contextual repertoire of public health knowledge and skill. This incorporates the utilization of community and population data to make informed decisions and contribute to the wider public health debate whilst still acknowledging individual specialist skill in practice.

This module is designed to enable you to develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the research process which builds on existing skill and knowledge. Becoming a confident researcher is fundamental to your specialist practice skill as this knowledge will inform professional decision making and increase the scope of professional practice. Integral to this is an ability to synthesise existing literature specific to your area of expertise, develop a research question and using a critical lens position your methodological approach to procure a research proposal specific to practice. This distinct skill will evidence knowledge of literature searching, literature critique and incorporate paradigm belief. Using theories of being, knowing, methodology, ethics requires a deep engagement with the philosophy of research inquiry, an understanding of epistemology and ontology and how they intersect in the research act. Deepening knowledge of a range of research approaches will add to the specialist practitioners’ repertoire to advance practice and improve health care delivery.

This module aims to enable you to understand and demonstrate how evidence informs practice by the critical application and analysis of theories to practice. The module also provides the opportunity for critical reflection on practice, and will enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve the QNI Voluntary Standards for District Nurse Education and Practice (2015) or The QNI/QNIS Voluntary Standards for General Practice Nursing Education and Practice (2017) alongside the NMC standards for Specialist Community Nursing (2001), the NMC Standards for Prescribing Programmes (2018) and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Competency Framework for all Prescribers (2016).


The core modules and the specialist modules are designed for the development of practice, as well as facilitating generalist, specialist and multi-agency approaches. As roles within Primary Care over recent years have become altered and diverse the course has been developed to reflect the needs of this changing community. The focus of the programme is on enabling the monitoring and improvement of standards of healthcare through the supervision of practice , clinical audit, development of practice through research, teaching and the support of professional colleagues, through the provision of skilled professional leadership. This programme supports professional progress by developing professional awareness and decision-making.


On completion of this course you will:

Develop your subject knowledge and understanding of the principles of primary care as well as the development of maintenance of health of individuals and communities.

Evaluate and apply the theories of research and evidence-based practices that contribute to health care and identify trends in health policy and their effects on primary care

Demonstrate high levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in areas of clinical practice, care and management, clinical practice development and leadership.

Critically evaluate a range of skills including communication, organisational, analytical, presentation and interpersonal skills and be able to approach situations with an open mind.

Utilise a wide range of evidence to support decisions and critically analyse them and be able to justify your actions and beliefs.

Practice competently and evaluate personal and professional performance as well as being able to lead others and work to deadlines in an efficient manner


In order to access the course you must be registered on the appropriate part of the NMC register.

You must have a first degree in nursing / health related subject and have access to a practice placement within your chosen area.
