Philosophy - A and AS Levels

What are the main features of this course?
What is real? What is true? What are persons? What is death? Does God exist? Why should I be moral? These are the sorts of questions asked in Philosophy.
In the first year - the AS year - we explore whether reason alone can tell us the truth about ourselves and the world, whether experience provides a good basis for knowledge, whether God's existence can be proved, and whether God's nature can be known with clarity and certainty.
In the second year - the A2 year - we explore what it is to be a person, whether minds and brains are identical, how religious belief relates to how believers live, and whether science has 'disproved' religion.

How is the course assessed?
There are two examinations at the end of the first year - both an hour and a half long - and two at the end of the second year (one an hour and a half long and the other two hours long).

Who should study this course?
The course will appeal to anybody with a strong, critical, curiosity towards the world, but you will need GCSE English as an essential entry requirement because of the amount of reading and writing involved.

Where can I go next?
A level Philosophy is accepted by all Universities as an entry qualification for any non-scientific degree course. Students with an A-level in Philosophy may find that their qualification is a particularly useful foundation for degree studies in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Law, Social Sciences and teacher training.
