Course programme
In your first year, we will consider questions about the nature of knowledge and the extent to which we can be certain about anything. Do physical objects exist? How do I know whether I am dreaming right now? Can the existence of God be proved?
In your second year, we will explore how we make moral decisions. Is there an absolute moral law or are our ideas about right and wrong simply emotional responses to the world? We will also examine questions in the philosophy of mind. Are humans simply biological machines or is there something mysterious about consciousness that means we will never explain it?
- You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
- In addition, you must have achieved at least a grade B and a grade C in at least two written subjects, e.g. History, Geography, Humanities, English Literature, Business, Religious Studies or English Language.
International students:
- Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
- IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.
Assessment is by course work and by written exam at the end of each year.
Philosophy is a highly regarded discipline at Universities and Higher Level institutions. Paired with a History A Level, or History of Art, it can be a route into just about any Humanities-related degree or Higher Diploma.
