Course programme
The Research Master's in Philosophy offers eight different specialisations.
History of PhilosophyYou will explore specific issues in the history of philosophy and science from Antiquity to the contemporary period. Our specialties are: ancient cosmologies; medieval natural philosophy; the Scientific Revolution and the birth of modern philosophy; idealism and phenomenology; the emergence and end of the metaphysical tradition; philosophy in the technological age.
Metaphysics and EpistemologyThis specialisation mainly focuses on how metaphysical questions – on explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world that encompasses it – are raised in the continental tradition.
Philosophical AnthropologyYou will deal with philosophical significant questions related to human beings and examine the different states of the human condition.
Philosophical EthicsThis specialisation is about the moral conflicts and ethical issues in contemporary Western culture and sets them against the backdrop of continental European philosophy.
Philosophy of Language and LogicYou will learn to research the relationship between language and verbal and non-verbal communication in the context of social interaction.
Philosophy of MindYou will discover the mysteries of the mind and some of the most profound questions about ourselves, such as: do we have freewill? What is consciousness? And what is it that makes (most) human beings persons?
Philosophy of ReligionThis specialisation focuses on the philosophical reflection on religion in Western thought and contemporary society. It also explores the relation between philosophy and religion in Western and other cultural contexts.
Social and Political PhilosophyIn this specialisation you will study ‘the political' as an essential but conflict-ridden aspect of the human condition, and how politics is a way of coping with the issues resulting from this.
