We take an imaginative route through ancient, medieval and contemporary philosophy by following the paths
sketched by Argentine writer, Jorge Luis Borges. Our guide will be a collection of his short 'fictions' translated into
English, Labyrinths (Penguin books). In this course we will look at one or two stories each week and discuss the
philosophical themes they invoke.

About this course
- Demonstrate familiarity with the main writings of Jorge Luis Borges
- Demonstrate understanding of alternative traditions in philosophy, especially idealism and gnosticism
- Use and explain key concepts and theories of the self and the place of writing in its formation.
A copy of Borges' Labyrinths (Penguin). Please bring whatever you need to make notes. In our first session we
will discuss 'Funes, the Memorious' and 'Borges and I'.
Tutor presentations and seminar discussions. Each week we will discuss one or two short 'fictions' by Borges.
You will gain more from the class if you have read the texts in advance.

Course programme
We will cover a wide range of heterodox thought concerning time, memory, idealism, gnosticism, the nature of
reality and the world along with the place of fiction itself. Figures discussed will include William James, Henri
Bergson, Arthur Schopenhauer and Blaise Pascal who are often neglected in contemporary academic
philosophy. A central motif with be the nature of the self and its creation through writing and related practices and
disciplines.
