Who is this course for?
This course is for you if you are interested in taking photographs and writing about photography that interests you. The course covers a wide range of styles and techniques and looks closely at the work of other photographers and artists. The course encourages a thorough but individual approach to the subject.

What are the entry requirements?
You should have achieved a relevant art and design qualification at GCSE level, or have some background in art, design or photography. You will have a portfolio of photography from a previous course, your own private work, a hobby or from employment. You must enjoy the challenge of producing your own work and you will be willing to experiment with chemical, BW film processes and digital processes.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

What qualification will I receive?
On successful completion you will achieve an Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Art and Design (AS Photography). In addition to this you will have a portfolio of new work which will enable you to progress to the full A Level qualification or to a full time course in Photography.

Where can it lead?
You can progress to the A2, second part of the full A Level or to a full-time photographic course. Your qualification could be added to your other qualifications or experience to enable you to do other art and design or media courses. This course will also develop your skills for employment or exhibitions.

What will I study?
You will study Black and White / Digital photography, including Camera Theory, Developing B & W negatives, Processing B & W prints, Darkroom Techniques, Photoshop, Mounting and presenting work. Your study will also include History of Art/Photography, Health & Safety and the analysis of the work of other professionals and photography artists.

How will I be taught?
You will practice your photography in a mixture of studio, practical workshops, tutorials, technical demonstrations, lectures, seminars and with presentations from visiting speakers. The course is designed to provide practical, hands-on learning.

How will I be assessed?
You will complete three units (one a term for three terms) and be internally and externally marked when you have completed the course. This includes an eight hour timed practical examination in June. Most of the assignments are presented in work journals, portfolios and exhibitions.

What support is available while I am on the course?
In addition to the weekly support of the subject tutor, the College has extensive learning support services which are available to all students. These include careers advice, guidance, welfare services and student finance advisers.
