Who The Course is for
This course if for anyone who wishes to gain a vocational qualification in Art & Design (Photography) as a step towards a career in the industry or a university application. It is ideal if you are straight from school or are a mature student with relevant qualifications or experience.
Successful students tend to have:
-creativity and plenty of new ideas
-self-motivation to complete work on time
-an understanding of photography and its potential
-an interest in developing their own recognisable style.
Course Content
Students will study eighteen modules over the course of two years; these modules will include a variety of core and specialist units. During the course students will work in a number of photographic art related activities, including:
Art and photographic history
Camera controls
Darkroom practice
Digital imaging / Photoshop
Drawing and pre-visualising ideas
Fine art photography
Ideas generating
Location photography
Professional practice
Studio photography (portraiture, still life, fashion)
Web design
Key Skills
During the second year of the course students are able to specialise in their chosen subject areas.
Key Skills will also be developed through the period of study.
A certain level of manual dexterity will be required for all Art and Design courses.
Entry RequirementsLearning & Assessment Methods
This is a practical course; assessment is based entirely on course-work produced in art studios. All units are graded individually and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded (Pass, Merit or Distinction). Assessment of some units si through written work.
Qualifications Gained
BTEC Art & Design (Photography) National Diploma (3 -A Level equivalent).
Progression Opportunities
This course will enable you to progress to higher-level studies at university or to gain employment in the Photographic industry.
If you successfully complete a level 3 course at Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College we will offer you a place on an appropriate Foundation Degree at Newcastle College (subject to satisfactory interview or course audition).
Career Opportunities
Students may gain employment in the art & design industry.
Course Costs
If you are 16-18 years old you do not have to pay course tuition fees*.

If you need information on any financial support that may be available to you with fees or study costs on this course.
*exam and registration fees will be paid by the college subject to satisfactory attendance and course completion.
There is a studio fee of £70 per year levied with this course, payable within the first half term. This fee includes coach/train fare for three educational visits to galleries and relevant events, plus the use of a wide variety of specialist art consumables. A residential trip in the Spring term, typically for three days, to a European capital city is also planned at an additional cost of £120-150.
