Photography Portfolio

The ability to conceive, develop and complete an extended personal project is the mark of an advanced photographer. The rewards can be substantial: a place on a prestigious BA or MA programme, an artist’s residency, a magazine article, gallery exhibition or book publication. This course is designed to help you achieve greater direction and clarity in your image-making process as you set about building a coherent body of work.

The course begins with an informal introduction that focuses on each participant’s influences and personal goals. This will be followed by a series of reviews in which you will have the opportunity to present your work to the tutors and the group in order to get valuable feedback and suggestions on how you might progress; both from an artistic and promotional perspective. A series of slideshow lectures will also be used to promote discussion on various aspects of contemporary photographic practice.

Following on, the central part of the course will consist of several workshops covering topics such as:

• Post-production procedures – the preparation of digital files for print and the web
• Professional photo-editing strategies – editing and sequencing for print and the web
• Layout of photo-books and websites – aesthetics of presentation for print and the web

The final part of the course is built around a series of critical reviews, looking at how each individual’s work is progressing by revisiting their portfolio and helping them establish a unique artistic and professional profile. We will assist you in the final selection of images, giving advice on all aspects of the application process, discussing the various promotional strategies required to successfully market your work, and look at possible routes you can take after the course finishes.
