Course programme

The BA Hons Physical Education and Physical Activity follows the same structure as the foundation degree in Physical Education and Physical Activity, with a combination of University face to face sessions one day a week, alongside work based task. This programme allows participants to gain a full honours degree This course is an extension of the foundation degree which was developed in response to government reports emphasising the importance of daily moderate and vigorous physical activities and the OFSTED (2013) Report ‘Beyond 2012 Outstanding Physical Education for All’ which proclaimed that the best practices for a successful PE curriculum occurred when: “teachers enlisted the support of coaches, parents and other volunteers to run sports teams after school, or organise sporting events to enable pupils to compete against pupils in other schools (Ofsted 2013, pg 54); specialist coaches, particularly those with links to local sports clubs, worked alongside teachers in lessons and in extra-curricular activities to foster pupils’ interest in sport outside of school and generate exceptional levels of sporting performance (Ofsted 2013, pg 55)”. This qualification supports the “Participant Development Model” (participation and recreational oriented sports people as a separate route from performance orientated elite athletes and teams) as outlined in The UK Coaching Workforce Framework: the Participant development model user guide (NCF, 2009).
