This 30 credit Level 6 module will provide you with the knowledge to recognise the physical health needs of people who have a mental illness.

The content of the module has an emphasis on skills development to ensure that you internalise fundamental key skills in assessing, monitoring and treating physical health related issues.

Advocacy and person centred care in relation to physical illness, for people with a mental health disorder, will also be included.

About this course

Demonstrate a critical understanding of patho-physiology in relation to fundamental physical health care assessment.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the significance of altered physiology and blood chemistry and evaluate this information to ensure the patient receives appropriate care.
Demonstrate and critically discuss the issues related to delivering evidence based physical health care and informed interactions to patients who suffer from a mental health condition.
Critically appraise issues related to capacity and informed decision making relating to physical health for patients with a mental health condition.
Critically evaluate health promotion strategies for patients who suffer from a mental health condition(s).

The 30 credits gained from this module can also be used towards a 'Top Up'? degree by enrolling on the BSc (Hons) Professional Practice. In order to complete this degree you can automatically transfer these credits on enrolment within a two year period, otherwise application through the CATs Committee will apply.

Registered health care practitioners with a minimum 6 months experience in a relevant area.
For Level 6 study you?ll need 120 credits at Level 5 or equivalent.
Have the support of your clinical manager and a suitably qualified mentor/assessor.
Opportunity to work outside usual clinical area, if necessary, to gain specific clinical competence.

How will I be taught and assessed?

A range of teaching and learning, strategies will be adopted to meet your needs. These include lectures, practice session, problem solving, critical reflection, group work, seminars, case studies and student presentations.

You will be encouraged to use relevant research to discuss the evidence base for specific aspects of cardiac care.

Assessment will be based on a practical assessment using simulation methods and a written assignment.
