Course programme

A list of medical implications of handcuffing, including positional asphyxia and how injuries can be sustained. Identifies Health & Safety implications, including Sections 2 and 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Regulation 3(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 Power Regulations, Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007.
  • Understand the requirement of Power Regulations and how the use of force must be reasonable, necessary, proportionate and justified. Understand the various laws, including compliance with: Section 3 (1) of the Criminal Law Act 1967, Common law.
  • Understanding the legal position regarding the Human Rights Act 1998.
  • Demonstrate how to apply handcuffs to a compliant subject whilst maintaining your own safety.
  • Demonstrate how to remove handcuffs correctly to minimise te risk of injury.
  • Demonstrate how to apply handcuffs to a non-compliant subject and how to minimise the risk of injury to both you and the subject.
  • Demonstrate how to stand a client up in handcuffs from a laying or prone position so to minimise the risk of positional asphyxia.
  • During the course we look at many case studies particularly those were people have suffered death under detention.
    Demonstrate how to complete a use of force form inline with legislation.
