PILATES IN THE WORKPLACE

THE BODY CONTROL PILATES ACADEMY

One day workshop

Physiotherapists see many problems, which are the product of today's sedentary lifestyle - we sit in a car to get to work, spend hours sitting at a computer, sit in the car to drive home again, and then perhaps sit in front of the television. Even when due care and attention is given to car seat design, and the ergonomic set up of the workstation, the way we use our bodies in relation to the equipment is important. All too often musculoskeletal pain syndromes result from cumulative, habitual faulty movement patterns.

Pilates can be an effective way of preventing and overcoming these problems. Exercises performed at the workstation, or by taking a little time out for a class, will allow the opportunity to relax, stretch out, and focus internally to heighten postural awareness. The exercises need not be physically exhausting, or even work up a sweat, and so are ideal to fit into a lunch break, enabling the participants to return to work refreshed for the afternoon.

Covers working postures and problems; history and principles of Pilates; Pilates fundamentals (breathing, alignment, lumbar and scapular stability); exercises, case studies.

It is assumed that participants are already familiar with the content of the 'Introductory Workshop'.
