Course programme

It is recognised that public art is an important factor in improving the aesthetics of our built environment and enhancing a sense of community and ‘place’. Artists are beginning to play an even more important role in identifying opportunities and design concepts within the urban and rural developments.

This course will provide an introduction to the process involved with planning a piece of public art - including the identification of local opportunities, budget, material, presentation, community collaboration, installation, evaluation, marketing and sustainability.

You will evaluate the historical context of public art and where and why it’s popularity and importance has increased over the years – and what direction it may take in the future. You will also discuss the range of public art that exists, from physical infrastructure, landscape and environment management and education and community development. You will also discuss the various scales, from community art projects to strategic cultural commissions.

By looking at examples of public art, you will consider factors such as site, process, time and material in creating your work.

Course Outcomes
By the end of this course you will have a greater understanding of the possibilities and processes involved with public art and have developed a concept and strategy which will enable you to take forward your own project.
