This day course will look at the life and plays of Anton Chekhov .considering his influence, his concerns and thestyle and dramatic effectiveness of his plays. We will look at extracts from The Three Sisters Uncle Vanya TheSeagull and The Cherry Orchard.

About this course

Have an appreciation of the themes and style of Chekhov's major playsRecognise Chekhov's contribution to Naturalism in the theatreAnalyse the plays both as literary and performance textsAppreciate Chekhov's influence on contemporary theatre.

Please bring the Penguin Classics edition of the plays.This includes all of the plays to be discussed in the translation we will be using. Any other version will have adifferent translation and will hamper the progress of the day.

Chekhov's life , his contribution to Naturalism in the theatre,his work with Stanislavski, his dramatic technique -use
of subtext, imagery,characterisation and ,by using video extract-the 'page to stage' process and performance
analysis.
Extracts from the Seagull, The Cherry Orchard, Uncle Vanya and The Three Sisters will be read, discussed and
viewed.


It would be helpful if you could read the 4 plays before the class
The teaching and learning methods will include a mixture of small and whole group discussion with some tutor
introduction and the viewing of extracts from film versions of the plays.
