Course programme

We shall ‘visit’ cities in several countries over the past two centuries, including Byron’s London, Baudelaire and Apollinaire’s Paris, the New York of Lorca and Frank O’Hara, Anna Akhmatova’s St. Petersburg, Roy Fisher’s Birmingham. We will focus on their descriptions and interpretations of the urban landscape and its inhabitants, and how their poetry is formed by (and helps to form ideas and feelings about) the cities that they represent. Foreign poets will be studied in translation.
