The course is designed to improve your professional knowledge and encourage more confident teaching. Its aims are to:

deliver valuable teaching resources related to the science and design technology curriculum
promote knowledge of polymers and their importance to the quality of everyday life
inform on new developments in materials, science and prototyping/manufacturing technologies

About this course

The Polymer Study Tour is an intensive four-day residential course for secondary school teachers of science and design technology. With its focus on teaching resources, information on new developments and networking opportunities with teachers in the discipline, this course is intended to help you improve your knowledge and understanding of aspects of the curriculum related to polymers.

This course is closely related to the science, and design and technology curriculum, and is therefore suitable for both practising and trainee teachers in these subjects.

Course programme

Day one (starting on a Sunday afternoon to allow time for travel to the venue):

  • introduction to the course and plastics industry
  • education support from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining
  • lectures on the history and design of polymer products
  • dinner

Day two:

  • lectures on polymer science and technology
  • practical sessions and workshops, including hands-on polymer processing and testing, CAD and CAM
  • dinner with a guest lecture from a local industrialist or academic

Day three:

  • industrial visits to local plastics processing companies
  • dinner with a short speech from an officer from the Worshipful Company of Horners

Day four (course closing by 4pm to allow time for travel):

  • lectures on sustainable environment polymer materials and applications
  • practical session on polymer identification and testing
  • final session: evaluation, development and improvement
