The GPN (PGCert) programme’s conception and rationale reflects the essence of a number of recent policy reviews which attempt secure the future of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), these include the NHS Five Year Forward View, General Practice Five Year Forward View, General Practice Nursing 10 Point Plan (GPN 10PP) and the most recent NHS Long Term Plan announced in January 2019. Not only do these attempt to ensure the NHS is “fit” to deliver safe, effective and responsive care but also champion the philosophy of a new way of delivery for the health of the UK population, with the focus being placed back on provision at source, which places General Practice and other Primary Care services at the heart of delivery.
It is recognised that in order to support these ways of working, there is an absolute need for a workforce, which is well equipped, competent and confident in their delivery, and which highlights the need for effective initial and on-going education (Simmons, Deakin, Walsh et al, 2015). In addition, it is recognized that there are current major concerns around recruitment and retention within the sector (QNI, 2015) and polices such as the GPN 10 point plan have reflected on the need to support the current workforces more effectively and to consider new ways of attracting individuals, striving towards a sustainable career in General Practice and well-equipped workforce which is responsive to change.
We are also able to provide a number of funded places available for this programme for 2020 entry. Please see the ‘Fees and Funding’ section of this page to find out how you can apply.
