Course programme

About The Course

This programme is designed for practitioners who are in a setting where they teach primary mathematics. It is ideal for practitioners who want to increase their knowledge of mathematics education to improve their own practice and have an impact on the wider mathematics education within their setting.

In order to support this, the first module focuses on developing your understanding of mathematics pedagogy, taking a critical look at how different approaches developed and how they work in a UK context. You will examine this in your own mathematics teaching through Lesson Study, where you will work collaboratively with colleagues. You will also develop your own understanding of mathematical concepts involved in number and calculation.

In the second module you will learn about coaching and mentoring and how to design and undertake an action research project so that you can take a leadership role in improving an aspect of mathematics education in your setting.

This programme will support you in applying for mathematics co-ordinator roles or senior positions such as deputy headships.

Modules
  • Pedagogy Of Primary Mathematics
  • Action Research In Primary Mathematics
Assessment

Different types of assessment are used across the two modules to appropriately test and apply different areas of knowledge and to allow you to demonstrate a wide range of skills. These will take the form of a coursework task, along with presentation of your research. Both modules will require you to demonstrate your understanding, including the application of the knowledge in practice.
