The IPOST, or Postelegraphonic Institute, was a social security institution governed by Law no. 259 and subsequent amendments, reserved for the workers of Poste Italiane Spa and associated companies, as well as the state staff of the State Company for telephone services (or ASST), which merged into Telecom Italia Spa in 1994. Since 2010 the institute has been merged with the INPS, submitting its activities to the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies. The Postelegraphonic Institute had been reorganized with DPR 8 April 1953 n. 542 and was then affected by the profound reforms of the postal and telecommunications sector of the decree law 1 December 1993 n. 487, converted into Law no. 71/1994, as well as the subsequent regulations referred to in the Interministerial Decrees of 12 June 1995, no. 329 and 18 December 1997, n. 523, relating to the transformation of the Post and Telegraph Administration into Poste Italiane first and then Poste Italiane Spa.
