This postgraduate certificate is the initiator and comprises 60 credits of study towards the MSc Construction Project Management course. Learners will be introduced to the growing need within the built environment sector for professionals with a thorough understanding of the management of the construction process from inception to completion. As a student you will experience structured learning with problem-based scenarios and research that will develop your capabilities for critical thinking, argument, creativity and encourage innovation, all of which may be brought into the practical decision making processes encountered in built environment projects.

This course will introduce you to the art and science of construction project management covering areas that may include strategy, control, technical, commercial, legal, financial and organisational issues. You will begin to reflect on and make cases for the integration of the technical (hard) and social (soft) management styles required within the context of strategic and operational construction projects.

The modules that may be included in this flexible course can enable progression to qualification at post graduate diploma and masters levels on successful completion of a requisite number of modules and credits. Individual modules may also be used as part of Continuous Professional Development courses offered by the University.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

Appraise critique and evaluate the advantages of the art and science of effective and efficient construction project management within a variety of strategic and operational contexts.
Acquire knowledge through academic, industrial and practical research and apply solutions to a range of complex issues, adopting suitable approaches to problem solving and decision making.
Work, lead and manage within an effective team environment whilst analysing and recognising the contributions of individuals.

For entry onto the Postgraduate Certificate programme
(Completion of which, with a minimum of grade C in all modules, will allow a student to progress to the Master’s programme )

A pass at degree level or relevant experience which will be determined through the process of application and interview.

Students applying for individual modules will be required to demonstrate the ability to absorb technical concepts and detail, possibly by way of their previous industrial or commercial experience.

Minimum English competency is the standard Postgraduate entry: IELTS 6.0 or equivalent

Course programme

This course comprises 3 x 20 credit modules taken from the MSc Construction Project Management. Lectures and tutorial sessions currently run on Thursday afternoon and evening (first year part time) and Wednesday afternoon and evening (second year part time). This enables self-directed study to be programmed by the student to complete the study requirement. Modules are timetabled for completion in one year. If you have been out of studying for a long time or unsure about the commitment it is possible to study for the PG Certificate (60 credits) or the Diploma (120 credits) and upgrade to the full MSc if successful and before accepting the lesser degree. You will take three of the modules studied for the MSc Construction Project Management giving a total of 60 credits. The modules are as follows and the choice will depend upon the timetable operating at the time:
