Course programme

Course review:

Learn to be a professional ceramics restorer. One of our 3-week courses will equip you with the skills and knowledge which will enable you to undertake virtually any pottery or porcelain restoration project.

Among the skills included are:-

  • Identifying types of Ceramics and deciding on the appropriate materials and techniques to use
  • Cleaning pieces and dismantling old repairs
  • Assembling and gluing broken items
  • Consolidating hairline cracks
  • Repairing chips and other minor damage
  • Modelling missing parts
  • Molding missing parts from existing ones
  • Hand-painting and glazing
  • Air-brushing
  • The achievement of differing glaze finishes (high gloss to dead matt, pearlized, etc.)
  • Basic Gilding

The Course dates shown are all for just one week and we suggest that you split up your course over three separate weeks so that you can practise what you have learnt at home between sections. If you would prefer to take the course in a single three-week session, then please contact us and we will try to help you. Please contact us to discuss what you would like to do, and to check the availability of particular dates.

All tools and materials are provided, but you will need to bring a selection of pieces with a range of faults to repair (we suggest that you do not bring a £2000 Worcester vase as you first item!). Charity shops are an ideal souce of suitable pieces.

We will provide you with comprehensive notes, which include details of suppliers of materials and equipment which you will need to be able to continue once the course is over.

We also provide a light lunch and an endless supply of tea and coffee!
