How is film stardom created? Who creates it and what for? These are the underlying questions behind reading the images of film stars – especially stars who happen to be female. This course examines the working lives of five women who exemplified the notion of screen stardom.

A pen and a notebook.
Film clips will be projected onto a large screen in the classroom, with supporting power-point presentations from the tutor. Film analysis is achieved through large and small group discussion focusing on particular elements of each film, which is an essential part of our process. Hand-outs and written commentary to take away as well as recommended films and suggested further reading will be provided each week.

Course programme
A range of international screen players: Deborah Kerr, Barbara Stanwyck, Marlene Dietrich, Setsuko Hara and Isabelle Huppert – all these women had unusually long and influential careers. Each week we will consider the career of one these great names of cinema. Clips from four or five films for each will offer examples of their achievement. We shall also consider the cultural and historical context in relation to the art achieved.
