Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses are for pre-Initial Teacher Training (ITT) students who are in need of development of subject knowledge before starting ITT. All courses aim to provide participants with the knowledge and understanding of their subject needed to teach the school curriculum in their subject area. They are for those starting PGCE, School Direct Tuition and School Direct Salaried courses

About this course

To have gained sufficient subject knowledge and understanding related to the school curriculum in your subject area to begin teacher training.

Participants must:

have discussed starting an ITE course with a training provider in the SKE subject for which they are applying.
not already hold qualified teacher status
have agreement from their ITE provider that they should attend

Once you have submitted your application, your eligibility will be considered by the university.
· In the case of School Direct and external applicants, your intended ITE provider will be contacted to confirm their support.

Course programme

Sessions will explore the practical aspects of computing such as:

•Learning visual programming languages (e.g. Scratch/BYOB, Alice, Kodu);

•Learning to program in Python (procedural language);

•Learning to program in Visual Basic .NET (object oriented language);

•Learning about the nature and characteristics of assembly language and other

low level languages via software such as ‘Little Man Computer’

•learning to create ‘apps’ using MIT AppInventor;

•Learning principles of electronics for programming control devices like the

Arduino, and developing a working control project that involves using both

electronic components and writing code to control them.
