Exploring silkscreen printing on fabric, using different types of screen stencils; cut and torn paper stencils and a hand drawn design exposed on to a photo sensitive screen. You will have the option to send off images and make thermofax screens as an easily accessible supplement.to your photographic screen. Develop and combine techniques and learn to use pigment printing systems to achieve specific effects. We will explore effects of layering using opaque and transparent binders, and speciality methods such as foiling, flocking and puff binder. You will be introduced to the work of fabric printers using these techniques. Create your own fabrics as samples or for use in artwork, or making interior or fashion items.
The course can be taken independently or used to build on and extend skill from VX336 Printed Textiles - the basics in term 1, VX337 Printed Textiles: experimental screen printing in term 2.

About this course
- Create a hand-drawn artwork to make a single positive.
- Expose your positive onto a screen to create a photographic screen.
- Use paper stencils in combination with a photographic screen.
- Prepare your cloth for printing and fix your prints.
- Mix colour and prepare pigments and binders.
- Follow good health and safety practice.
- Produce samples and experiments demonstrating speciality finishes.
More advanced learners will be able to:
- Further develop skills and refine ideas.
Please bring:
· A sketchbook
· An overall and rubber gloves, and wear old clothes and shoes with a grip.
Basic materials are supplied but you will need to bring your own fabrics to suit personal preferences. This will be discussed with you in class.
