This module will consider the context of practice nursing, health and professional policies in relation to primary care. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop skills in an analysis of the evidence base in the general practice setting, promoting professional development through reflection on practice whilst also developing your knowledge and understanding of health issues pertinent to primary care.

About this course
This course is aimed at nurses new to General Practice Nursing and will give you the opportunity to develop a range of relevant clinical skills.
The credits from this module can be used towards an honours degree qualification in BSc (Hons) Professional Practice (Healthcare).

Course programme
Within this module you will gain knowledge on a wide variety of clinical skills essential to general practice nursing. These include:
- Communication and consultation skills including history taking in the context of person centred care and partnership working
- Diagnostic tests
- Record keeping
- Cervical cytology and HPV testing
- National Immunisation Schedule
- Travel health
- Ear care including irrigation
- Wound care
- Venepuncture
- Gender specific health issues
Teaching and assessments
A variety of teaching methods are used within the programme including group work, self-directed learning, demonstrations and tutorials. Online learning will be used to complement traditional methods of teaching.
The assessment of the module will be through completion of the competency document and a summative case study based on a patient from general practice
Mode of Assessment
A variety of teaching methods are used within the programme including group work, self directed learning, demonstrations and tutorials. Online learning will be used to complement traditional methods of teaching.
The assessment of the module will be through a practice portfolio. This will provide evidence of implementing the learning in a general practice setting.
You will also be assessed through an observed structured clinical examination (OSCE). This provides objective and consistent feedback on the practical based elements of the course.
