Course programme
In the period of work placement, students can expect to earn about £10,000 of which £1,000 to £2,000 will be spent on food and accommodation. Nursing assistants are responsible for assisting patients/clients with personal care; fluid and nutrition; mobility; and elimination needs. In addition to meeting physical needs, care assistants also play an important role in meeting the emotional needs of patients/residents.
Care assistants employed in health care facilities are often the principal caregivers, having far more contact with patients than other members of the staff. They should be healthy, tactful, patient, understanding, dependable, and have a desire to help people. They should also be able to work as part of a team and have good communication skills. Nursing assistants may be employed in hospitals, in private duty, in assisted-living facilities, hospices, home health areas, or nursing homes. Generally there is a considerable shortage of applicants for nursing assistant posts in the UK.
