Course programme

The programme consist of a set of core modules, and two optional modules. You must complete all core modules and one of the optional modules for the award of Professional Doctorate.

First year:Core modules

Leadership in Professional Practice (January to April)

This module explores professional issues by focusing on leadership, and the values, capabilities and attributes you associate with this. It provides you with an introduction to interprofessional challenges associated with leadership and prompts you to reflect on your professional identity and leadership style.

Professional Identities in a Changing World (May to August)

This module is an opportunity to explore professional identities and, in doing so, gain increased appreciation of what different disciplines can contribute within interdisciplinary contexts. This, in turn, will equip you to work more effectively across interdisciplinary boundaries.

Research Methodologies for Interdisciplinarity (September to December)

This module offers an introduction to research methodologies and concepts, with an emphasis on disciplinary similarities and differences, to ensure the development of relevant and actionable knowledge.

Second yearCore modules

Applied Research Methods for Strategic Tools (January to April)

This module encourages you to develop a deeper understanding of the way that research methods , quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods, can be used effectively to address complex problems in practice from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Transforming Lives through Innovation (May to August)

The emphasis of this module is on encouraging you to engage with creativity and design approaches. You will become immersed in the iterative process of the design cycle in which problem solving and learning processes occur concurrently. For some of you this will be a completely new, challenging and invigorating approach; for others, those familiar with the process, it will be a case of explaining and engaging others in their disciplinary perspectives.

Critical Review of Literature and Practice (September to December)

This module will give you an in-depth understanding of approaches , and experience of how to apply them, for critically reviewing and synthesising existing knowledge and practice across different disciplines, enabling you to identify gaps suitable for further empirical investigation.

Third yearCore modules

Thesis (January to December)

This module aims to further advance your knowledge, skills and ability to conceptualise, create, implement and evaluate new approaches in your sphere of professional practice. You will develop a substantive piece of work (a 40,000 word thesis and viva voce examination), synthesising the learning from the associated Professional Doctorate modules, and demonstrating your ability to increase the knowledge base underpinning your discipline. To facilitate your progression, a structured approach, with formative assessment (in addition to supervisors ongoing oversight of drafts and progress), is utilised; it is anticipated that this will promote your confidence and competence as you progress from third year to fourth year.

Plus one of the follow option modules

Practice-based Consultancy Intervention (May to August)

This module will enable you to develop an understanding of the principles, tools and processes involved in applied consulting through a ‘hands on’ live project with an external organisation. It will be a practical experience designed to develop consultancy and other transferable skills related to managing change.

Coaching (May to August)

This module offers you an introduction to the concepts, skills and practice of coaching within organisational contexts and as part of an institutional development strategy. A central theme of this module is self-reflection within a framework of lifelong learning and organisational effectiveness. You will also be encouraged to explore interprofessional issues associated with coaching and creating a coaching culture within an organisation.

Fourth yearCore module

Engagement and Impact (May to August)

This module provides you with an opportunity to develop confidence and expertise in planning and developing research outputs which will engage different audiences and have impact. The focus will be on the development of outputs from across the duration of the overall professional doctorate programme.

You will begin your Thesis module at the start of year three, once the assessments for years 1 and 2 have been completed. You will first develop a plan for your empirical work, building on exploratory work on the topic that you have undertaken over the first two years (informed by supervision, topic-related coursework and personal study).
