The course is specifically designed for people with no prior dry lining experience, its aim is to provide you with the theoretical understanding and practical skills required to work in a safe and responsible manner within the Dry Lining industry.

You will be spending 5 days at our training centre to complete the practical training, and assessments.

You will need to bring steel-capped boots or shoes and suitable clothing such as overalls. All tools and other material will be provided. Reasonably priced work boots will be on sale at the training centre.

Programme Details

The course is designed to prepare you for working straight after your course and you will be covering:

  • Health & Safety principles, the tools of the trade, safe and correct use of tools, use of protective equipment, working with materials, plant and equipment.
  • Introduction to metal stud and track, moving quickly onto how to build partition walls.
  • You will learn the basics on how to set out walls from a working drawing, how to form door ways and openings, and learn the correct fixings into the backgrounds and correct spacing of the fixings.
  • How to ‘cut’ & fix plasterboard to the partition including a demonstration with explanation of cutting and fixing the plasterboard, correct spacing of the fixings, size of fixing in relation to thickness of plasterboard and different types of plasterboard with their uses.
  • The correct techniques will be taught on how to apply and ‘bed in’ tapes to plasterboard joints and angles. Together with a demonstration and explanation of how to apply tapes to plasterboard to prevent cracking, different types of tapes and corner beading and their uses.
  • An explanation of two and three coat dry lining procedures.
  • Instruction on applying first caulk coat for covering tapes and instruction on how to cover tapes and start to form flush joints and corners, together with explaining the process for doing this.
  • How to apply a second caulk coat to form flush joints and corners. You will also receive instruction on how to apply the final coat of dry wall cement to form flush joints and corners.
  • Demonstration of dry liner system of metal work fixed to brick or block work.
  • Instruction on sanding joints with explanations of ‘rubbing down’ dry lined joints, the grades of sand paper that can be used and general finishing.
  • The fixing of plasterboard direct to timber stud partitions, plasterboard and jointing compounds. Calculations of materials needed to cover set areas.
  • You will learn the direct bond system of plasterboard to wall (Dot and Dab), including instruction with explanations of the procedures to fix plasterboard to brickwork and block work. Measuring out and lining in wall, correct spacing of dabs, solid ribbons on perimeters of walls around openings and electrical components.
  • You will work with different types of plasterboard, learning how to nail, distinguishing which plasterboards can and cannot be used for this system.
