Professional Practice: Perioperative Pathway BSc (Hons) Top Up

If you are a Registered Practitioner working in the Operating Department setting this course will develop your theoretical background and clinical performance whilst encouraging you to learn by a problem seeking approach and encourage you in seeking and using an evidenced based approach to your practice.

The Perioperative Pathway on the BSc (Hons) Professional Practice degree was initially commissioned by the local Trusts to provide structured continuing professional development for Registered Practitioners working in the Perioperative setting. However latterly interested candidates from outside the local facility have joined the pathway and its popularity from this market is growing.

The aim of the pathway is to complement theory with practice; for this reason a commitment from the practice placement area is an expectation for the course.

The student undertaking this pathway will enhance their employability status by attaining a degree with a named pathway in their recognised field.

The course comprises of six modules developed with input from the local Trust’s and improved and updated from feedback from students and Trust’s who have commissioned places. The pathway has four mandatory modules which include research, pain management and perioperative recovery and two optional modules where the candidate can choose from a list of modules which include basic anaesthesia skills, extended anaesthesia skills, leadership and change management, work related study and Mentoring and Assessing.

This course is studied generally on a part-time basis as it is necessary to complete some hour’s supervised clinical practice within your own clinical area in some modules.

The theory is delivered by a combination of teaching methods, including group work, practical workshops, and seminars.

The students accessing this course with be supported by the University’s online learning space called Moodle. This space will hold material and information needed for the student to successfully complete the module. It will also be used as a communication forum by the academic staff teaching on the included modules and the students.

Different modules have different assessments however the three specific perioperative modules – perioperative recovery, introduction the anaesthesia skills and extended anaesthesia skills all carry two components of assessment, these are a two thousand five hundred word essay, and a competency document to complete in practice.
