Course overview The BSc (Hons) Professional Studies (Complementary Health) is primarily suited to students who are progressing from a Foundation Degree in Complementary Therapies who wish to develop their academic skills and career whilst gaining a degree qualification. The aim of the BSc (Hons) Professional Studies (Complementary Health) (Top-up) is to enable you to reflect upon the work-based experience you already possess and identify areas for development taking into consideration learning outcomes for the programme, national and local standards and codes of conduct. The programme will further develop your academic and vocational background in relation to complementary health practice. It places emphasis on analytical skills directed towards design, development and critical analysis of client-centred care. The course has a very flexible framework that can be adapted to fit your personal circumstances, employment and professional development, enabling you to develop a programme that is directly relevant to your role. A theme throughout the programme is the linkage of the professional to their context. This focuses your learning on meeting the needs of clients within an environment that requires effective team, inter-professional and inter-agency working and communication, as well as expert practice. What you will learn

You will enhance your critical awareness of current issues within health studies and health care practice. You will develop an in-depth knowledge of a range of health care topics and the principles and theories which underpin them in relation to your own area of practice.

You will achieve high levels of proficiency in the key skills relevant to your personal and professional development planning needs, including team skills, problem solving, numeracy, oral and written communication skills, and information and communication technology.

You will learn to take responsibility for the extension of your learning and to exercise independent judgment in the investigation, analysis and evaluation of health care fields that you perceive as relevant to your own practice. You will also develop the confidence to apply your knowledge and reflect on experience in the independent critical analysis and evaluation of health care practice.

In addition, you will learn about ethical principles, values and moral concepts inherent in health care practice, legislation and professional and statutory codes of conduct relevant to your practice, and an understanding of health and social care delivery configurations. You will enhance your research skills and learn to develop evidence-based concepts and explanations from law, psychology, social policy and sociology. You will also gain an insight into public health principles and health education in your practice.

What you will study

Having successfully completed a foundation degree, you will already have attained 240 credits. You now need a further 120 credits at Level HE6. Each of our modules are worth 20 credits - you need to complete six modules in total to gain the award of BSc (Hons) Professional Studies (Complementary Health).

You will study the core compulsory modules of 1) Evidence Based Practice and Research Methodologies and 2) Research Proposal.

You will also study a further four optional modules. The modules from which you can choose include:

The Biological Basis of Disease and Therapeutics;

The Human Body: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care (Systems);

Care of the Older Person;

Leading and Managing Teams;

Legal, Ethical and Professional Issues in Health and Social Care;

Negotiated Studies;

Multi-Professional Support for Learning and Assessment in Practice;

Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults;

Contemporary Mental Health;

Contemporary Approaches to Dementia Care.

Additional information

Careers & professional development Completion of this BSc (Hons) degree will enable you to explore working in complementary therapies, in the NHS, hospices, consultancy or within a clinical environment. You will be able to progress on to the MSc Health and Social Care and related masters programmes.
