Course programme

BA (Hons) Professional Studies in Primary Education with QTS

The BA (Hons) Primary Teaching Studies with Qualified Teacher Status provides a 'tailor-made' progression route. Students follow a Higher Education level 3 programme leading to an honours degree with recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The programme is available full time over one academic year, followed by a school placement in the second year (usually the first term), in order to meet the professional standards for QTS, as identified in the DfES circular 09/07, 'Qualifying to Teach'.

The programme progresses directly from the FdA and continues to include significant elements of work-based learning. To this effect, students are able to retain employment over the academic year, along the same pattern as the FdA. All students are employed or volunteer as Teaching Assistants (or equivalent) or Unqualified Teachers and their extensive school experience is taken into account when negotiating individual training plans. One assessed school placement is completed within the student's workplace and it is essential that the school recognises this as an important part of the training process. Following completion of academic study, students make arrangements to be released from employment in order to complete an extensive school placement in an alternative setting.
