This is a course for students aged 16-18, who have left school and gained only a few or no qualifications, who are unsure about what they would like to do in their future and who may need support with managing emotions and behaviour. This course is designed to help students to either decide on a vocational pathway, progress onto a higher level of study or progress into employment. As part of the course students work towards individual goals and targets aimed at helping them to progress. They attend a work placement supported by a job coach and have the chance to improve their personal and social skills in areas such as teamwork and confidence building.

Course programme

All students complete Functional Skills/Progression Awards in Maths and English - Entry level to Level Two. Students with a D in GCSE English may be offered the opportunity to re-sit this qual. Alongside achieving individual goals and targets students will complete an Award in Progression with a focus on either work or vocational progress. Some students will complete an Award in Applied Science. Students will develop the skills they need to progress including teamwork, time-keeping, confidence and positive decision making. All students will complete either a work place visit or work placement where they will develop this skills employers want. Every student has a personal tutor who will help them to identify individual goals and support them through the course. Students are assessed in class and have to produce portfolio work to gain qualifications. Students will also have to sit assessments in Functional Skills. There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Students will be assessed when they attend an interview and will be offered a course of study based on these assessments. Students should bring any certificates they have to their interview. Stepping Forward (formerly Pathfinder/ Stepping Stones) can lead to courses in any of our vocational faculties, A' levels, Access courses, employment or apprenticeships.
