Course Content
Days one and two
  • The first two days of the course cover the theory of project management. Anyone who needs to plan projects as a core or significant part of their job will benefit from attending. An essential ingredient of a successful project is the effective utilisation of the project resources over time. These two initial days provide a structured approach to project planning, highlighting the concepts and techniques in a progressive series of steps to enable the delegates to produce realistic and achievable plans.
Day three
  • The third day of the course, usually held around one week later, allows the delegates to put the theory into practice. The delegates are arranged in groups of around four or five and are given a project to complete. They are given the project, the history leading up to the project and a description of the resources available (people, finance, etc). They are required to produce: an audience list, a work breakdown, a network diagram to calculate critical path and activity start and end time, a Gantt chart for the project showing milestones, a skills rosta, personal loading charts for two chosen members of the team - one must be full-time, an estimated budget for the project - all staffing costs should be calculated based on a 40 hour week, methods for communication, control systems to ensure the project is on course, and methods of evaluating the success of the project. The tutor and delegates discuss each section upon completion and a final de-brief is carried out. This final day is essential for the delegates to be able to put some very new concepts into practise and be able to put their skills into context.
