The workshops overall aim is to enable participants to take a fresh look at psychotic experiences and examine ways they can work effectively with people who are troubled by them. The workshops main focus is on psychological, social and service user understandings of psychotic experiences. The workshop also gives attention to the cultural, spiritual and economic contexts of psychotic experiences. Suitable for: Everyone who has a perspective on psychotic experiences. This includes, but is not limited to: Professional and non professionally affiliated mental health workers working in: 1. Community mental health teams. 2. Assertive outreach teams. 3. Early intervention teams. 4. Other specialist teams or teams within in patient services. Service users and their relatives/carers

Course Summary

Day One - the first day will allow participants to take a step back and consider psychotic experiences from a fresh perspective

  • Introduction and the contested nature of mental health
  • Professional & Public perspectives
  • Service user perspectives
  • Understanding causes, cultural context, formulations
  • Hope & discrimination (1): a recovery approach to psychotic experiences (the first part of action planning is included in this session

Day Two - the second day is about doing. It focuses on effective and helpful information and links these to action planning throughout

  • Introduction and reflections
  • Hope and discrimination (2): a recovery approach to decisions making and intervention (the second part of action planning is included in this session)
  • Psychological interventions
  • Related approaches - medication, self management and self help, complimentary therapies, work, ordinary support, social networks, diet and nutrition
  • Action planning - strategies for putting the action plan into practice. (this is the third and final part of action planning, when the finishing touches are made to the action plan)
