The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a multidisciplinary programme of study that aims to provide graduates and holders of relevant medical or non-medical professional qualifications with the advanced academic background required for leadership roles in public health. About this course

Flexible interdepartmental study programme that can be tailored to reflect your academic interests.

Regular speakers from local NHS bodies and central government agencies such as Public Health England and the Department of Health.

Combines the development of a strong interdisciplinary foundation in public health with the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in one of four distinct pathways.

Primarily UK-focused with emphasis on the prevention and control of disease.

Job titles of recent MPH graduates include: Public Health Specialist; Head of Public Health Intelligence; Health Partnership Programme Manager; Health Promotion Campaign Manager; Epidemiologist; Health Data Analyst; Project Coordinator; Public Health Advisor; Health Protection Specialist; Public Health Screening Coordinator; Vascular Prevention Programme Coordinator; Health Improvement Practitioner; Public Health Specialist: Healthy Living; and Lecturer in Public Health . Other MPH students have gone on to PhDs at King's and other universities.

A Bachelor’s degree with 2:1 honours is normally required. Applicants with a 2:2 (or overseas equivalent) will be considered where they offer significant work experience in a related field. A degree level professional qualification in an appropriate subject, normally with some experience in the broad field of public health (or primary care for MPH (Primary Care) applicants) will also be considered.

Course programme

Structure

Courses are divided into modules. You will normally take modules totalling 180 credits.Required Modules

All students on this course are required to take:

  • Prevention & Control of Communicable Disease (15 credits)
  • Basic Epidemiology & Statistics for Public Health (15 credits)
  • Public Health Dissertation (60 credits)

Students taking the Primary Care pathway are also required to undertake a Primary Care-focused dissertation topic, and are also required to take:

  • Delivering Public Health in Primary Care: from Theory to Practice (15 credits)

Students taking the Environmental Health pathway are also required to undertake an Environmental Health-focused dissertation topic and are also required to take one of the following:

  • Essentials of Environmental Public Health Science (15 credits)
  • Essentials of Toxicology for Public Health Protection (15 credits)

Students taking the Allied Health pathway are also required to undertake an Allied Health-focused dissertation topic and are also required to take:

  • Exercise as Medicine (15 credits)

In addition, students take sufficient credits to bring their total for the course to 180 from a range of optional modules that may typically include:

Please note that if you have opted for one of the specialist pathways, and if for any reason we are not able to run the additional required modules for that pathway, it may be necessary to transfer you to the mainstream Master of Public Health award.
