This course is for nurses and health workers who have an interest in improving patient health or in issues related to the wider arena of Public Health. The course aims to meet the needs of primary care, secondary care and independent sector nurses and paramedics who are interested in promoting health to prevent disease, or in supporting patients to change their health behaviours to avoid ill health or cope with or avoid chronic health problems, or to cope with disease associated with poverty.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

While this course offers a non-clinical route to a BSc degree with honours and as such does not require professional registration with professional bodies (such as the UK Health Professions Council or the Nursing and Midwifery Council) it is popular with UK health professionals. Students also share learning in most of the modules with home students who are currently in practice as health professionals such as paramedics, midwives and nurses.

• There are no clinically based placements; however, you do study alongside professionally-qualified home students which encourages two-way learning amongst peers.
• The course team recognises the needs of international students and in some cases the transitional need to adjust to study within the UK Higher Education context.
• Considerable support is offered in relation to information retrieval skills via courses, teachers and the specialist library services.
• Advice and support in developing academic study skills is offered via the course director and other student services such as the Centre for Academic Writing.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This course recognises the need to underpin Public Health Studies with a sound knowledge of research appreciation and evidence based practice. Two mandatory modules give prominence to research and evidence based practice in public health studies. In addition, two further mandatory modules are taken in public health and health promotion.

Students are also offered some choice from a range of optional modules which may cover topics such as:

• policy to promote public health;
• leadership and change in public service management;
• fundamental issues in safeguarding children.

Students may particularly wish to pursue a personal or professional interest as part of the course and they can focus on their interest within a work-related learning module.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

A wide variety of engaging teaching and learning approaches will be used (in addition to traditional lectures) including:

• online support for each module;
• tutorials;
• individual and group supervision;
• seminars and workshops;
• discussion;
• student-led presentations.
