Course Overview

This course is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Public relations is one of the fastest growing professions - it's an exciting, challenging and satisfying career. You'll work with high profile public figures and business leaders in building and defending reputations, help build major brands and services, and work for the public good in government and not-for- profit organisations. Public relations is a world-wide profession and you'll have many career opportunities to choose from.

The BA (Hons) Public Relations is also the UK's longest- established course with its strength recognised widely by leading international consultancies, government, major companies, academics and not-for-profit organisations.

There is a well-balanced combination of academic and professional practice study in the BA (Hons) Public Relations. You'll find the teaching staff are leading academics and practitioners, many having worked in senior positions as well as being important researchers of national and international significance. They are also members of The Media School's Centre for Public Communication Research, too. So your teaching is always at the leading edge of theory and practice, which gives a real advantage as you go forward in your career.

What really sets the BU BA (Hons) Public Relations apart is that all students do a 40-week paid placement in a leading public relations workplace where they put their first two years of study into action and prepare for a final year research project. We believe that the 40-week placement gives you valuable experience of working in the public relations industry and in putting your learning into practice. It's also a strong reference on your CV and answers the question facing many graduates as to how to get real, bankable experience before graduating. Employers queue up to attract BU students to their public relations placements with three times as many places on offer as there are students. Many only make this offer to our students and to no other university.

When you complete your four years at BU, you will be amongst the best educated and most professionally-ready entrants to the public relations industry. There are very high levels of graduate employment within six months of graduation, with many employers specifically recruiting only from BU Public Relations graduates. You'll also have a portfolio of work from your placements and course projects that is a big help to getting your first job as it shows your depth of learning and experience.

There's no better place to study for a career in public relations than at The Media School at Bournemouth University, which has been designated as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. That means it is top rated for excellence in teaching - and you will get the benefit. It also has the best media production resources in British universities. You'll be rubbing shoulders and sharing ideas on the future of communication with tomorrow's top advertising creatives, journalists, media producers and screenwriters.
