About this course
4 GCSE grades A-C or equivalent including English & Maths and a satisfactory school report or references. Pre-course aptitude and fitness test to assess skills in communication, observation, reasoning and logical thinking. The fitness test consists of a bleep test, 1.5 timed run and grip test.

Course Overview
A 2 year course for those wishing to enter the Police, Fire or Ambulance Services, Armed Forces, Prison Service, Customs and Excise and other community/emergency service related organisations. It will provide the skills, discipline and knowledge required to equip you for your career in Public Services.
Course Structure
The course runs over two years and comprises eighteen units of 60 hours per unit:
- Government Policy and the Public Service
- Citizenship and contemporary society and the Public Service
- The planning for and management of a Major Incident
- Team development
- In Public Service
- Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions
- Understanding Discipline within the Uniformed Public Services
- Diversity in the Public Service
- Physical Preparation and fitness for the Uniformed Public Service
- Team leadership in the Uniformed Public Service
- Understanding Discipline within the Uniformed Public Service
- Skills for Water Based Outdoor Adventurous Activities
- Uniformed Public Service Employment
- Command and Control in the Uniformed Public Service
- Responding to Emergency Service Incidents
- Crime and its effects on Society
- International Perspectives
- Fundamentals on Nautical Studies
Trips and at least one overnight camp, one 1 week camp and one overseas visit. Application of Number and Communications will also be studied alongside the main qualification.
Qualification Aims
Entry to many sectors in Public Service is highly competitive and successful completion of this course will not be a guarantee for employment. However, progression to HND, Degree courses or professional qualifications can be considered as UCAS points are accrued. This course is roughly equivalent to 3 A Levels.
Assessments/Examinations
Mix of a large amount of written and practical assessments.
You need to be a team player, a high level of discipline, stamina and communicate well.
Cost / Equipment
For students over 19 there will be a registration fee of approximately£125.00.
Warm and practical outdoor clothing, boots, stout shoes, a water resistant coat, fluorescent jacket and suitable clothing. A sleeping bag and eating utensils are essential for overnight activities. Gym shoes and sports clothes are required.
A contribution of£65 is required for course materials + charge towards week's trip.
A mandatory uniform will be available to purchase from the department (approx£27)
Help with essential equipment costs may be available to students who experience financial difficulties.
Passport and E111 health card.
