This course provides great opportunities for learners to develop key skills required to work in the public services, for example the police, fire and armed forces or to progress to further education and study, within this area.

The majority of the course is classroom based with some practical and outdoor activities. Typically you will spend three days in college attending classes, lectures and group work. Potential leaners must be prepared to work and study outside of college to be successful.

Successful learners who meet all the college’s progression criteria can apply for a Extended Level 3 programme, or depending on their age and the service apply for a job.




You will need 4 GCSEs at grades A-C. These must include English language and maths. Other qualifications that can be used are relevant Level 2 qualifications (a Public Services Level 2 must be at merit grade or above). You will also need to be successful in an interview and complete our induction programme.

Course programme

Learners will explore entry requirements to services and selection processes, as well as some other key related topics such as Government funding, citizenship, teamwork, leadership and navigation.

Course Assessment Method

You will create a portfolio of work over the duration of your course. All of your assessments will be internally set by your tutors and these could be essays, reports, posters, practical assessments or role plays. All assessments are marked against criteria set by the awarding body, BTEC, and you can achieve Pass, Merit or Distinction grades for individual units and then ultimately your whole course.
