Health and Social Care
BTEC National Certificate - Two-year course
This course is equivalent to two A Levels and provides a specialist vocational programme of study that covers the key knowledge and some of the practical skills required when working in the health and social care sector.

The course will allow for progression to university and/or employment in the field of health and social care. The NHS is Europe†s single largest employer with over one million employees. This, combined with opportunities in the field of social work, social care and education, makes this course all the more attractive. The course is modular with students covering 12 units over two years and covers a range of topics that include:
  • Communication Skills
  • Health and Safety (involving First Aid training)
  • Equality, Diversity and Rights
  • Complementary Therapies
  • Introduction to Counselling
  • Public Health

Work experience is an important part of this course and involves 100 hours of work placements, usually in two-week blocks. Students are encouraged to relate their experience to the work they do in College. They will be assessed on a variety of assignments. There are no formal exams as the course is 100% coursework based.

Careers and Further Studies
The qualification can lead to a range of Higher Education courses. Many of our students progress to university to study and train for the Nursing Diploma or degree. It is also appropriate for further education and training in Radiography, Occupational Therapy and other careers in health and social care.

General Entry Requirements
At least four GCSEs at grade C or above or a BTEC First Diploma (or equivalent) in a related area at Merit level.
