Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management - BSc(Hons)

Year 1

In your first year you will develop an understanding of relevant legal, economic, management and technology principles.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

• Quantity Surveying Practice and Procedure
• Law, Economics and Management
• Building Science
• Construction Technology and Services

Year 2

The second year focuses on enhancing your understanding of the commercial aspects of development and construction. You will learn how to measure and evaluate the costs associated with construction projects. Other areas covered include construction law and contract administration, development and design economics, construction procurement and business organisation.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

• Quantity Surveying Project
• Procurement and Contract Practice
• Construction Technology and Building Services
• Development and Design Economics
• Professional Practice for the Built Environment Professional

Optional Placement Year

All students are encouraged to spend their third year on placement. The curriculum in the second year includes support finding this placement. Students who undertake a placement year will complete a work based research project.

Final Year

In the final year, you will apply your skills and knowledge through real projects and problem-solving scenarios. You will also be encouraged to question and critique UK practice and procedures and to make comparisons with European and international practice.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

• Strategic Cost Planning
• Commercial Management
• Advanced Quantity Surveying
• Dissertation

Plus one of the following optional modules:

• Collaborative Practice
• Work-Based Research Project (studied during placement year)

Please note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.

Our tutors provide a friendly, collaborative environment for learning. They are also actively engaged in research or professional practice so you learn directly from the latest academic and business developments.

The course is taught through a blend of learning activities, which include tutor led and face-to-face learning, student led and independent study, online study, group projects and students supporting one another's learning. Practical skills are developed through role-plays and employer visits.

You are encouraged to do 'formative work' to prepare for assessments: this does not count towards your marks but feedback will help improve your performance. Support is available for students who have difficulties with numeracy, IT, literacy and study skills.

Lectures, workshops/seminars, group project work, and tutoring account for 12 hours of contact time per week. You will also be expected to spend at least double this time (24 hours) in essential independent study.

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework, unseen and seen examinations. As well as assessing your knowledge and skills, these develop graduate attributes valued by employers. These include communication, presentation, negotiation, IT and numeracy, team working, project and time management skills. Also, the intellectual skills of problem solving, critical thinking, analysis and evaluation, creativity and innovation.
