Apart from bearing sons, what else did queens do? If there were no male heirs, were women merely conduits by
which a crown was passed to a husband, or could she expect to wield power? We consider these questions and
more in a study of the careers of the Empress Matilda and Melisende of Jerusalem.

Course programme

There will be a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate key points and reading of contemporary extracts (in translation). There will also be whole group discussion. You will be encouraged to share your thoughts and ideas in a relaxed and friendly environment. Please bring a pen and paper. Books will be recommended but students are not required to purchase them if they do not wish. This is not an exam course. There are no extra costs.
